Jesus in the depths

Jesus in the Depths

I’m currently on my second round of 30 Days to Resilience through the One Minute Pause app. Today is Day 19, which focuses on finding and experiencing Jesus within the depths of your heart.

The first time I went through this part of the journey, I struggled. I had moments of sensing something stirring, but I don’t think I truly experienced Jesus within me the way John Eldredge describes. It felt distant, just out of reach.

But today was different.

As I followed the guided reflection, I was lying on the ground—face up, eyes closed, arms stretched out—part of my regular physical therapy routine. That’s when it happened: a vivid, unexpected vision.

I saw Jesus gently open my rib cage, not in a painful or forceful way, but tenderly. Then, with playful ease, He dove inside—as if jumping into a pool. Once inside, He began to swim, doing a breaststroke. I laughed. I smiled. It was so unexpected, so intimate, so joyful.

Then He turned onto His back and started doing a backstroke. I joined Him. The setting shifted. It was nighttime. The moonlight shimmered across the water. We floated together, side by side, our bodies forming the shape of crosses. In that moment, peace and joy washed over me.

What made this experience even more profound is that I don’t usually have visions like this. In fact, I’ve taken the aphantasia test with my therapist—the one where you close your eyes and try to visualize an apple. I couldn’t see anything. I’ve always felt like something was missing, like that part of my imagination was broken. A friend of mine was recently diagnosed with aphantasia too, so I know I’m not alone. Still, it’s rare.

So for me to receive such a clear and beautiful image—it had to be God. Showing up. Breaking through what I believed were my limitations.

It was a powerful reminder: God truly lives within us. And He isn’t limited by our abilities, our struggles, or our insecurities. He meets us exactly where we are and makes His presence known in ways we never thought possible.
